MOVIE INFO
After almost drowning in a lake, Madison finds herself bound to a life of fear. Unable to describe what happened to her during the moments she was underwater, she begins to develop hydrophobia: an abnormal fear of water. Crippled by her post trauma, Madison attempts to shut out the world but her fear intensifies and she is faced with the vision of a dark figure that haunts her day and night. After watching her struggle for one year with the phobia and visions, Madison's four friends attempt an unconventional intervention in which they accidentally open a floodgate to a dark place where none of them are safe. As Madison and her friends dive deeper into the dark history of this figure that haunts them, it reaches out and begins dragging them to a horrifying place that they can never come back from.
The Drownsman (2014) is a Canadian supernatural thriller slasher horror movie that was filmed in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Director and co-writer Chad Archibald (Neverlost (2010), Antisocial (2013), Desperate Souls (2005)) did a remarkable job with the movie considering he does not have much experience. Chad paid homage to Wes Craven by naming one of the hospitals in the movie "C.G. Craven Psychiatric Facility." It does remind me of Nightmare on Elm Street. The Drownsman had a lot of potential to be an awesome movie, but the cast and directors execution of the movie was not on par.
Madison (Michelle Mylett - Weak Ends (2014), Antisocial (2013)) is terrified of water. She is scared of a glass of water, water in the lake, rain, water in the sinks and other water sources because she nearly drowned a year ago. She almost drowned by slipping on a beer bottle, bumping her head on the deck and fell into the lake. She is so scared of water that she takes her water/fluid intake intravenously. She had a vision or dream of an old creepy man with dark wet long hair that covered a little of his face that looks dark and leathery while she was unconscious under water. She calls the mysterious man, The Drownsman. She disappointed her best friend Hannah (Caroline Korycki) by not showing up at her wedding because it was raining. Her friends were so angry with her and really had enough of her water phobia that they tried to cure her of it. They hired median Cathryn (Clare Bastable - Aftermath (2014)) who summons The Drownsman out of his watery dominion. Their attempt failed when The Drownsman started to haunt all of them to take their lives and Madison learns of some family secrets that may involve The Drownsman/ the beast. The beast can attack the girls wherever there is water to any kind of fluid, even vomit. The beast drowns his female victims in tubs of ice cold water.
The actors and actresses did not do such a great acting job with their parts, and it was sometimes unbelievable. The actors and actresses do not have much experience - I think this movie would have rocked if it had a good, experienced cast. The only character I connected to was Madison. The other girls did not have any back stories or any details about their lives. The atmosphere, pace of the movie, storyline and lighting was good. One thing that boggles my mind is how does Madison look so squeaky clean when she does not touch water and therefore does not shower.
