The Hunger

David Bowie

IMDb
The Egyptian vampire lady Miriam subsists upon the blood of her lovers. In return the guys or girls don't age... until Miriam has enough of them. Unfortunately that's currently the case with John, so his life expectancy is below 24 hours. Desperately he seeks help from the famous Dr. Sarah Roberts. She doesn't really belive his story, but becomes curious and contacts Miriam ... and gets caught in her ban, too.
Written by Tom Zoerner

Scientist and physician Dr. Sarah Roberts is conducting research on blood and the role it plays in those suffering from premature and accelerated aging. In her very public work, she is approached by among others a seductively beautiful blond woman who attends one of Sarah's book signings, and John Blaylock, who claims he has just started suffering from advanced aging. She initially believes John is the next in a long line of crackpots she's encountered, that is until she sees how much he has aged in the few hours he has waited to speak to her. It isn't until she goes looking for John after the fact that she finds out that the blond woman is Miriam Blaylock, John's wife. What Sarah does not know is that Miriam is a vampire queen, she who promises eternal youth and life to who started as her mortal lovers as she injects them with her blood with her bite. John is the latest in those lovers, he who has been with her for centuries. Her promise, however, is not altogether true as her lovers do end up aging exponentially once she discards them from her favor, after which they are doomed to an eternity of human life in an always aging and decrepit body. Sarah returns to the Blaylock home both in her want to investigate further John's situation, but also in her mutual attraction to Miriam. As such, she may end up the next in the long line of Miriam's vampire lovers who will also eventually be doomed to a life of eternal aging.

Rotten Tomatoes
The exquisitely beautiful Catherine Deneuve plays Miriam, a centuries-old vampire capable of bestowing the gift of immortality on her lovers -- namely her current partner John (David Bowie). To sustain their sanguinary requirements, the pair cruises New York nightclubs in search of victims (as illustrated in a stunning opening sequence to the accompaniment of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" performed by seminal Goth band Bauhaus). When John awakens one morning to discover telltale signs of aging, it is revealed that his own sustained youth is not permanent, and his physical decrepitude begins to increase at an incredible rate. In a panic, John visits the clinic of scientist Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon), who has recently published a book on reversing the aging process, but she initially dismisses him as a crank, leaving him to sit in the lobby for several hours... during which his body ages several decades. After learning of his condition, Sarah traces John to his uptown flat. John is nowhere to be found, having been consigned by Miriam to a box in the attic with her legions of undead loves, leaving Miriam to deal with Sarah -- which she does quite effectively, seducing her into a steamy lesbian tryst. Their passion is consummated by a mingling of Miriam's blood with Sarah's, which later manifests itself as a psychic link between the two women and leaves Sarah with a rapidly-increasing appetite for blood. ~ Cavett Binion,

Dont Open Till Christmas

IMDb
Somebody with very little Christmas spirit is killing anyone in a Santa suit one London holiday season, and Scotland Yard has to stop him before he makes his exploits an annual tradition.

Rotten Tomatoes
In this run-of-the-mill horror film, it is the Christmas season, and derelicts who need money for food and/or booze get jobs playing Saint Nick in the city's department stores. An insane killer has taken a strong dislike to these Santas and either violently does them in or disfigures them in very ugly ways. A Scotland Yard detective (Edmund Purdom, also the director) has been assigned to capture the serial killer, but when he is unable to get results fast enough, he is replaced by Sgt. Powell (Mark Jones). The list of suspects includes the Scotland Yard detective, a reporter who happens to be on the scene just after one of the crimes is committed, and another fellow who was also around for several of the attacks and is indirectly related to one of the victims. The puzzle will hopefully be solved while some Santas (Father Christmas in England) are still around. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

To All A Goodnight

IMDb
A group of teenagers at a party find themselves being stalked by a maniacal killer in a Santa Claus costume.

OHTheHorror
“Lock your door, too. I want you to be safe, Nancy. There’s evil here, I can feel it. The devil’s here.”

For horror filmmakers, the challenge of making a movie set around Christmas is often “how can we make the holiday scary?” The answer is often to corrupt Christmas and have the film go against everything Christmas stands for. A meaningful, peaceful holiday like Christmas is then filled with images of bloodshed and carnage. The easiest and most common target in Christmas horror… the killer Santa Claus. First seen in a segment of 1972’s Tales from the Crypt, the “killer Santa” gimmick would actually not be used again until 1980, when Last House on the Left actor David Hess made a little yuletide slasher film called To All a Good Night his directorial debut.

It’s Christmas break at the Calvin Finishing School for Girls and the girls who share this particular house have only one thing on their minds: Sex. They drug their housemother and invite a group of boys over, to fulfill their needs. Of course, at this particular house, Christmas has always been a bit of a controversy. It was on Christmas break years earlier that a girl was accidentally killed in an initiation gone wrong. And now, with images of studs dancing in their beds fresh on their minds, someone has shown up dressed as ol’ Saint Nick to exact a bloody revenge upon the house. One by one, the girls and their gentleman callers are subjected to a series of grisly, vengeance-fueled murders. Will someone save them or will the girls experience a silent night…forever?

So a killer Santa Claus might not be the most original Christmas horror movie idea ever, but here, it was only employed for the second time. It would be used in Christmas Eviland then again in Silent Night, Deadly Night. Both of those films are much better known to the horror film world than To All a Good Night, although I do think the killer Santa in this one is much scarier than in both of those. For one thing, like all the best slasher killers, it uses an actual mask… a very creepy, rosy cheeked, friendly faced mask of Santa. Most other killer Santas merely slap on a fake beard and hat, using their own face to scare victims. The Santa mask here, though, is quite effective in the few scenes that you can actually see it (more on this later). The problem is, the rest of the movie isn’t quite as effective. In fact, all around, it just feels a bit generic. I’m all for style over substance if the style is good enough, but here, it’s just kind of plain and with a threadbare script, there really isn’t much to cling to.

For the most part, the kills are good and mean. We get a decapitation, throat slashings, an arrow through the back of the head and out an open mouth, and what might be the signature death scene of the movie… death by airplane propeller. The nudity present in the film isn’t something to write home about. There are a few beauties in this film, but the only ones that appear nude are the ones I would hope to never see nude again. The killer, as I’ve said, is pretty effective in the scenes where you do see the mask. The problem is that, it is gravely underused. Of course, this could’ve been due to the dark transfer of the Media VHS that I watched the film on. It’s hard to say, but I do think in any case, Hess could’ve gotten much more mileage out of the mask had he shown it a bit more (and a bit earlier). I didn’t even know the killer Santa was wearing a mask until nearly halfway through the film.

As I said, though, the script is completely weak. It delivers the same kind of slasher shenanigans that other films do. While that’s sometimes not a bad thing, here, there is nothing at all to liven things up. Want a “Crazy Ralph” type character to warn the kids of something bad going on… you get that here in a crazy, mentally challenged gardener. The opening of the film was very reminiscent of the opening in Prom Night. The little girl’s death in that film is the exact same as the death of the girl during her initiation in this one. We have the usual red herrings set up as to who the killer might be, then one by one they are dispatched of. We also get the kind of over-the-top cheesy romance lines that prevailed in not just 80s horror, but comedy as well. For instance, one girl says to a potential beau… “Time for your advanced course in… relativity.” You just never hear stuff like that anymore. It’s probably no shock as to why, of course. It doesn't help lines like these that the actors and actresses delivering them are strictly amateurs when it comes to talent.

The Christmas mood of the film is minimal, but we do see lights occasionally. The music of the film is the standard 80s synth job. While it has a few nice touches here and there, I was mostly bored with it. Still, it’s a moderately interesting composition for 80s synth buffs. To me, the biggest surprise of the film is that actor David Hess didn’t make an appearance at all. With such a recognizable face on the US and International horror scenes, you’d think he’d wanna be able to slap his pic on posters even if all he did was make a cameo. I guess this time out, he simply wanted to conduct duties behind the camera as opposed to in front of it. While that is commendable, I guarantee that had he appeared in the film somewhere, it would've seen a DVD release by now. Hess' direction isn’t bad. In fact, it’s quite competent. It’s just not particularly memorable or flashy. Take his name off the film, and you could’ve substituted it with any other director of slasher movie ripoffs of the time and no one would be any the wiser.

To All A Good Night has yet to see a DVD release, and the last news I heard was that somehow MGM owned it in their vast library now. It’s a shame, as the film could definitely use a modern restoration. Released by Media Home Entertainment, the film suffered on VHS from what many other horror films released by Media suffered from…horribly dark transfers. A Nightmare on Elm StreetTerror on TourFatal Games, and other releases by Media have some scenes so dark that it’s nearly impossible to tell what is going on in them. To All A Good Night is no different. Many scenes look like the viewer is simply staring at black carpet, while a horror sound FX CD is playing in the background. The darkness does provide a good contrast for the Christmas lights and holiday mood, though. All this said, I do moderately recommend the film for slasher fans. It’s not the best or most original, but I think fans will enjoy the cookie-cutter nature of the formula going full speed ahead, the mean, inventive kills, and the creepy Santa killer. Not the best by a long shot, but certainly worth seeing once. At the very least, it's passable holiday horror fare, but only if you’ve already seen essential flicks like Silent Night, Deadly Night and Black Christmas.Rent it!

Blood Rage

IMDb
Man is blamed for murders actually committed by his evil twin.

Rotten Tomatoes
The highlight of this sometimes humorous horror film is the performance of Louise Lasser. Maddy (Lasser) is the mother of ten-year-old twins Todd and Terry (Mark Soper). Terry sneaks out of the car at a drive-in movie and slashes the throat of an innocent victim. The evil twin blames it on his innocent brother Todd, who is sent off to a mental institution. Ten years later, Maddy is about to get married again and plans to make the announcement of Thanksgiving Day. She receives a phone call saying that Todd has escaped, and the thrilled Terry begins to make secret plans to begin another killing spree.

Ghosthouse

IMDb
Visions of a deceased girl and her doll bring doom to the visitors of a deserted house.

Hysteria-lives
I came across this bizarre little slasher by accident. Where else would you get such an hysterically cheesy (and poorly worded) tagline? Choice dialogue abounds in this supernatural slasher directed by “Humphrey Humbert”. Don’t let the geeky American name fool you though. It’s our old friend Umberto Lenzi as I discovered when I checked the IMDb for more info. Still, right away I knew this had to be an Italian flick--the stilted and surreal dialogue, the synth music, the no discernible story whatsoever...Scientists from around the world have attempted, using sophisticated measurement devices, to detect any discernible plotline in an Italian horror film. They’re still looking.
Spooky goings on in the Ghosthouse ...
The movie starts off well if not completely coherently. There’s an old house and we get to see what happened in it 20 years ago, ala BOOGEYMANHALLOWEEN, etc. Set to this strange, ominous organ music with bizarre chanting with it, we see what appears to be a little girl killing her parents after offing the family cat. Or maybe it was a neighbors cat. We don’t even know if this is the girl’s house. Who needs details when there is blood to be spilt! Someone, either the girl or this creepy, and I mean CREEPY, clown doll she carries at all times actually kills the man and woman. The guy gets an ax crashing down onto his skull in full color and view, and the woman gets a knife to the throat. But because the guy sees lightbulbs start getting bigger and then exploding before he gets axed to death, we know we’re not dealing with a typical slasher.
So after the “20 Years Later” caption and no further explanations, we get to meet the real hero of our movie, Paul. And because 20 years later to this movie means 1987, the cheese whiz starts getting spread VERY thick. Now, maybe I missed this fad, but apparently it was very hip to work ham radios, as Paul is shown doing. He’s talking to someone on a ham radio, while wearing a “hip” ensemble featuring the skinny tie and blazer with the sleeves rolled up look so popular back then if you were in Huey Lewis and the News. Then, to show just how “modern” and “with it” this movie is, he talks about someone he knows dating Simon LeBon from Duran Duran. I’m definitely starting to feel the Reflex here now...the GAG reflex! Then to really put this over the top into classic cheese territory, he talks some nonsense about which actress is more popular in Denver-Kim Basinger (which is mispronounces as “Bah-singer”) or Kelly LeBrock. I swear I am not making any of this up. Paul himself looks like Vince Vaughan with a bad mullet.
The awful noise! For God's sake turn off that Duran Duran tape! For the love of God!!!
This is all side splitting but unfortunately, the movie starts off confusing as hell because the filmmakers just decide to drop us, the audience, somewhere in the midst of the action and we’re just supposed to catch up. But bear with it, it’s just getting started.
Essentially, the ploy here is that Paul the mullet-headed hero, picks up voices on his ham radio. When he thinks he hears a murder over the airwaves, he and his chili-obsessed girlfriend Martha hit the road to find out what’s going on. The girlfriend’s thick Italian accent was quite hard to interpret, leading me to hear such lines as “Is it much feather?” while they were hunting down the radio signal. Once he traces the radio waves to an old abandoned house with “an evil aura” according to girlfriend helpfully, we get to meet the other people who are going to die numerous ways. Don’t worry about their names. It won’t make any more an impression on you than the actors will.
And they say an 80's fashion revival is upon us - be afraid!
But here’s where the film uses the ham radio device effectively, if not at all coherently. Paul plays Jim, one of the new people they meet at the house, the tape he made of the voice screaming in terror. It’s Jim’s voice, but Jim insists he’s never recorded it or seen the ham radio inside the attic of the house. So now the mystery starts to build. Is Jim playing some kind of joke or is the radio receiving transmissions that haven’t occurred yet? Either way, it’s a very cool twist. As they all split up to solve the mystery, they start dropping like flies and the director has some fun scaring the audience quite well.
Spooky and cheesy in equal measures (well, maybe a tad more of the former!)
Borrowing VERY heavily from SUPERSTITION and even THE SHININGGHOSTHOUSE is long on style and gore, low on plot and character development. But since when have the Italian horror directors worried about what was lacking when there is always so much of everything else? And how can you go wrong with an evil clown doll thrown in for good measure. Overall I highly recommend GHOSTHOUSE. I would get rid of the ham radio first.

Justin:
The blue iris' review is right on the money, as usual! Lenzi, the man who churned out a legion of cheddary gialli in the 70's; who gave birth to the funniest horror movie -ever - the wonderful CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD (1980), (and the same year's trashy jungle shocker, CANNIBAL FEROX (aka MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY), did what dear old Fulci did with many of his gothic horror films and set his movie stateside.
Grand guginol, 80's style - yeah.
GHOSTHOUSE is one of those films which is so bad, so divinely trashy, that it gives me a warm glow just thinking about it. Everything, from the stroppy teenage girl with a face like a slapped arse, to the ghostly bedroom vortex where the heroine finds herself besieged by swarming Easter bunny decorations, to the leads who'd make planks of wood look theatrical, to, well ... let's just say, if cheese is your dish of the day then there's plenty to get your teeth into here. Lenzi throws in the kitchen sink - every last genre trapping is there somewhere - gleefully grabbing tidbits from every horror film imaginable like a magpie on acid, and chucking 'em all into the pot; even, against all the odds, managing the odd scare here and there. A veritable feast, and no mistake.
And, to think, the sequel stars Linda Blair and David Hasslehoff - God help us all!

Hospital Massacre

IMDb
While receiving a routine check-up, a beautiful woman is stalked by a maniac out to avenge a childhood Valentine's Day humiliation.

HorrorNews
SYNOPSIS:
When Susan was a little girl a mentally unstable boy gave her a valentine card. When he sees her laughing at it he snaps and kills one of her friends. Nineteen years later Susan is grown and has an appointment at a hospital with her doctor to pick up a medical report. Unfortunately for her the boy that she laughed at is at the hospital as well, and he still hasn’t gotten over the fact that she made fun of him so long ago. He goes on a killing spree at the hospital, knocking off anyone he comes across as he makes his way to Susan so that he can make her pay for her actions all those years ago.
REVIEW:
Hospital Massacre (aka X-Ray) was one of the few 1980’s slasher flicks that had eluded me for years so I was very happy when I received a copy of it to review. I had heard of it years ago and thought that it sounded pretty badass, and when I finally got the chance to see it my expectations for it were pretty damn high. Fortunately I wasn’t disappointed with it and I can happily say that it is an awesome little flick. I enjoyed every minute of it and I guarantee that slasher fans (and horror fans in general) will absolutely love it as well.
I love movies that revolve around the main character having to deal with some horrible event from his or her past, and that is exactly what takes place in this film. The opening scene is awesome and just genuinely creepy thanks to Billy Jayne’s performance as Harry who is one crazy and creepy little bastard. Ever see a kid get impaled on a hat rack because he was making fun of someone’s valentine card? You will here, and it is a pretty effective scene and a great way to start a movie!
I also enjoyed the fact that Susan (and the viewer) doesn’t know what the adult Harry looks like so he could potentially be anyone that she interacts with at the hospital. It adds a little mystery to the mix as when we see Harry killing someone he is wearing surgery clothes (including a surgical mask over his face) so we can’t see what he looks like. It isn’t exactly the hardest mystery in the world to figure out as we get a huge clue early on in the movie after Susan arrives at the hospital, but I still like the fact that the filmmakers decided to include an element of mystery to the film as it makes it more enjoyable.
There are some pretty cool death scenes that kept me satisfied as well. We get the kid impaled under the chin on the hat rack, some hard core stabbings, an acid bath, a decapitation, and someone getting set on fire and falling to his death. There is also a weird scene that features Harry running down the hall with a sheet that he uses to smother a nurse with that I liked for some unknown reason even though it is a little cheesy. There was just something about seeing him standing at the end of the hall holding the sheet over his head that I thought was effective (and a little bit creepy). There definitely isn’t a lack of cool death scenes in this movie and I couldn’t have been happier as a result.
The only problem that I had with the movie was the fact that I didn’t really care for most of the characters other than Susan (played by Barbi Benton, who is a real hottie). The entire hospital staff is made up of total assholes and they treat Susan horribly. At first they are just rude as hell to her and then they basically refuse to let her leave and are physically abusive (they strap her to a bed at one point) toward her. What kind of hospital has nurses that physically restrain you and doctors that get pissed off because they have to help a new patient? I know I wouldn’t want to be treated at this hospital as it is more like an insane asylum than a regular hospital (and what was up with all those crazy old women crammed in the room with Susan? I thought that it was just very weird).
I thought that Hospital Massacre was pretty awesome. It has all the elements needed to make me happy (such as a creepy flashback story, fun death scenes, and a masked killer roaming around killing everyone in sight). I definitely think that it was worth the many years that I had to wait to see it and I wasn’t let down in the least. If you haven’t seen it then I highly recommend that you check it out as I firmly believe that many viewers out there will love it.
