Sebastiane 1976

IMDb
Reassigned to a lowly outpost, a Roman guard's Christian beliefs clash with his gay commander's desire for closeness. Being tortured becomes pleasurable.

Rotten Tomatoes
Filmed entirely in vulgar Latin, this experimental film recounts the life of Sebastiane, a puritanical but beautiful Christian soldier in the Roman Imperial troops who is martyred when he refuses the homosexual advances of his pagan captain. When this film was released, it was the only English-made film to have required English subtitles, and it is an early film by the noted experimental and outspokenly homosexual director Derek Jarman, who died in 1994. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The Brotherhood

IMDb
The fraternity "Doma (House of) Tau Omega" has found a key to eternal youth without having to become blood-drinking vampires. Will they be able to recruit Chris, an innocent and perfect newcomer?

Rotten Tomatoes

A cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the television series) and a Calvin Klein underwear ad, David DeCoteau's The Brotherhood tells the story of a group of young, attractive vampires who reside in California. The secret sect of blood suckers must find someone pure from the nearby college campus to sacrifice. The cast includes DeCoteau regulars Michael Lutz, Forrest Cochran, Bradley Stryker, and Donnie Eichar, all of whom would go on to appear in the director's Scream knock-off Final Stab.

Plot[edit]

Young Chris Chandler, a student at Drake University, gets a new roommate, Dan, and becomes friends with him. Meanwhile, the fraternities are pledging and a student said to have been interested in Doma Tau Omega is found dead on the campus.
Chris, who has no high opinion of fraternities, gets to know a student of psychology, Megan, who invites him and Dan to a party of Doma Tau Omega, saying that she does not want to go there alone. However, when they arrive at the party, Chris seems to be interested only in the leader of DTO, Devon Eisley, and approaches him. After waiting for Chris a long time, Megan and Dan leave the party. Chris, meanwhile, is made drunk by Devon, who then makes him a member of DTO by drinking a bit of his blood while, in turn, Chris has to drink a bit of Devon's.
Shortly after that, Chris is introduced to parties in the DTO house, where he and Devon drink blood from a girl called Sandy in a way reminiscent of sexual intercourse. Dan is unsettled by the change in Chris since joining the fraternity, and breaks into the DTO house. Investigating the book of DTO, Dan is shocked to find photos of Devon throughout the decades of the fraternity's history, completely unchanged. He persuades Megan to go with him to Chris´ room, which they find totally ravaged. They decide to look for Chris at the fraternity house.
At the DTO house, Devon tells Chris that he lives eternally as long as he transforms his soul into a new body every century, and that this time, Chris would be the one whose body is used. The student found dead on campus was made to commit suicide, as he was afraid to participate in the ceremony and threatened to go public. Chris tries to flee but is knocked out by the other DTO members, Barry and Jordan. Dan and Megan try to enter the fraternity house, but their way is blocked by DTO member Mikhail who threatens them with an axe. Dan grabs the needle used by the fraternity members to get blood from their victims and thrusts in into Mikhail's neck, killing him.
In the house, Dan and Megan meet Berry, Jordan, Devon and Chris, who are already beginning the ceremony. Megan reveals herself as a decoy who has worked for Devon over the last 70 years and was tasked with luring Chris. She threatens Dan with the axe, saying that she will kill him if Chris tries to resist the ritual. Chris stops fighting and kneels down in front of Devon. While everyone is concentrating on Chris, Dan suddenly breaks free of Megan. He takes the axe, and attacks Devon with it. Devon, the other fraternity members and Megan all die, leaving Chris and Dan standing amongst the carnage. Dan asks why Chris did not die, and Chris answers, "I told you I would never join a fraternity." The two leave the house.

I Do is directed by Glenn Gaylord (writer/producer of "Leave it on the Floor") and produced by Stephen Israel ("Swimming with Sharks," "Boy Culture") and David W. Ross. Ross also wrote the film, which has won numerous Audience Awards at film festivals throughout the country, and the "Best of the Fest" Award at this year's Palm Springs Film Festival. The film views marriage equality in the U.S. through the prism of immigration rights. Stepping right into the middle of the marriage equality debate, I Do is the deeply affecting story about a man forced by discrimination to make an impossible choice. Yet while both sides of the issue passionately state their cases, what's left in the balance are families and couples often split apart, especially those with bi-national makeups. Truth

Truth - P - 2013

HollyWood Reporter

A gay relationship goes violently awry in Rob Moretti's graphic psychological thriller.

As gay-themed cinema goes, Truth definitely veers towards the exploitative side. This psychological thriller presents a portrait of a relationship gone very, very wrong. But its Hitchcockian aspirations are sabotaged by a tendency towards lurid melodrama that is more laughable than chilling. Cult status at midnight screenings possibly looms if audiences can be persuaded to repeat chunks of the inane dialogue But it quickly becomes obvious that the hunky Caleb is deeply troubled and that things will go seriously awry, as indicated by the opening scene in which he’s seen in prison being interviewed by a solicitous therapist (Blanche Baker, of Sixteen Candles). It turns out that he was seriously abused by his mother as a child, and his medicine chest filled with psychotropic medications indicates that he’s clearly not recovered from the trauma. Surprisingly, neither the drugs nor the dramatic revelations are enough to scare off Jeremy, who after being told one horrific story soothingly intones, “That must have been really hard for you.”The story, told in flashbacks, concerns the ill-fated romance between young Caleb (Sean Paul Lockhart, who also co-produced) and the older, more stable Jeremy (writer/directorRob Moretti) after they connect on the Internet. It’s love at first sight, with the pair engaging in sweetly romantic activities and plenty of hot, torrid sex, with the latter depicted in graphic fashion and plenty of full-frontal nudity.
Eventually, things take a violent turn, with Caleb handcuffing Jeremy to the bed and brutalizing him after learning about a hidden part of his life that spurs the film towards its surprise ending.
From the prison shrink asking Caleb, “How did that make you feel?” to a Mommie Dearest-style monologue by his mentally disturbed mother (Suzanna Didonna) in which the line “I cannot stand that I pushed out of my vagina” is one of the more subtle utterances, the dialogue is filled with one howler after another.
The frequently unclothed Lockhart, who’s better known as gay porn star Brent Corrigan, well fulfills the physical aspects of his role -- this is a film in which the underwear designer rightly gets a credit -- and Moretti is disarmingly appealing as the hapless lover. But for all their strenuous efforts, the performers are not able to infuse Truth with a single moment that feels remotely truthful.
  • A suspenseful, psychological thriller, "Truth" exposes the hidden demons buried deep inside each and every one of us. After a chance encounter over the Internet, Caleb, who suffers from borderline personality disorder, meets and falls head over heels for Jeremy, and soon the line between love and lies blur. Struggling to keep his past a secret, including his mentally ill mother, Caleb slowly succumbs to his darker side. A sudden turn of events finds Jeremy held captive, until Caleb's quest for the truth be revealed.

The Vampire Lovers

SteveCalvert UK Review

The Vampire Lovers (1970)

Directed by Roy Ward Baker
DVD Review: The Vampire Lovers (1970)The Vampire Lovers is a Hammer horror film, made in 1970, and based on the short story "Carmilla", written in 1872 by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. The story is set in 19th century Styria and the opening sequences of the film have plenty of spooky-looking, drifting fog and show vampire hunter Baron Hartog beheading a beautiful female vampire who is part of the evil Karnstein family who were responsible for the death of his sister. Although the Baron does his best to destroy the entire family there is one grave that he cannot find. That of a young woman named Mircalla.

Mircalla (Ingrid Pitt) is not opposed to taking male victims but her tastes run more towards members of her own sex and the first time the viewer sees her is when she arrives at a party being held at the home of General von Spielsdorf (Peter Cushing). She arrives with a Countess who introduces her to the General as her daughter, Marcilla.

Marcilla is an attractive girl and as soon as she arrives a young man whisks her onto the dance floor, while all the other men in the room look on in envy and await their turn. Only one man seems to show no interest in her. His name is Carl and he has eyes only for
von Spielsdorf's daughter, Laura. Carl isn't the only one who is intereseted in Laura  though, Marcilla can't keep her eyes off her either.Ingrid Pitt as, Vampire, Marcilla, in The Vampire Lovers (1970)While Marcilla is dancing von Spielsdorfis busy waltzing with the Countess. They have just finished their first dance when a rather anaemic-looking man arrives and informs the Countess that a dear friend of hers has just died.  The Countess apologises to von Spielsdorf and tells him she must leave. It is a long journey, she will have to ride all through the night, and she asks him if he will take care of Marcilla in her absence. The perfect gentleman and perfect host von Spielsdorf says it would be his pleasure; Marcilla will be good company for Laura. No good deed goes unpunished though, and his kindly gesture costs him the life of his daughter.Peter Cushing as General von Spielsdorf in The Vampire Lovers (1970)Marcilla disappears after Lucy's death, only to appear again, a few miles away, but calling herself Carmilla. Von Spielsdorf's friend, Mr Morton (George Cole), is out riding with his daughter, Emma, when they see a horse-driven carriage nearly overturn. Morton stops to see if he can be of assistance and helps a lady out of the carriage. The lady, who bears a suspicious resemlence to the Countess, claims that her brother is dying. She is rushing to be with him and so must sadly decline Morton's offer of hospitality. Her niece, Carmilla, however, has been badly shocked by the incident, so when Morton suggests Carmilla stay with him—his daughter would be grateful for the company—his offer is accepted, Carmilla stays behind, and it is not long before Emma Morton begins to develop similar symptoms to those suffered by Laura von Spielsdorf.

The Vampire Lovers is quite a good film, but there are a couple of loose ends to the story. For instance, and it is never explained whether the Countess is also a vampire. or the nature of her relationship with Carmilla? What became of her is just as mysterious because she is never seen again after she leaves Carmilla in the care of Mr Morton. This is excusable though, because Le Fanu's original story also leaves these questions unanswered.
An Unidentified vampire in the Hammer Horror film The Vampire Lovers (1970)The man who first turned up at von Spielsdorf's party, bringing bad news to the Countess, turns up several times throughout the film and he is definitely a vampire, and pretty scary-looking, but his relationship is to Carmilla is also a mystery. His presence certainly adds a few extra chills to the film.

The Vampire Lovers was the first film in Hammer's Karnstein Trilogy. The other two films in the trilogy areLust for a Vampire (1971) and Twins of Evil (1972). All three films share a lesbian theme and were considered quite daring in their time, by modern standards they are pretty tame though, and should not offend too many viewers. The Vampire Lovershas received a mixed critical response, but the film has become a cult favorite and many people consider it to be a horror classic
ReelFilm
The Vampire Lovers (August 18/03)
There's not much in The Vampire Lovers worth recommending, especially for those that don't particularly think that vampires are all that fascinating. Most films about the blood-sucking undead are able to remain entertaining mostly because they're willing to throw in engaging characters and an intriguing plot. Unfortunately, The Vampire Lovers contains neither of those elements.
The story revolves around a vampire named Mircalla (Ingrid Pitt), who seems to spend all her time assuming the identities of her victims. For whatever reason, Mircalla's not comfortable just killing folks at random; no, she takes her time and becomes quite friendly with her soon-to-be meal. After selecting a young woman that appeals to her (why she chooses who she does is never made entirely clear), Mircalla takes the time and effort to get said victim to trust in her - to the point where the two practically become lovers. Soon after, Mircalla kills the woman, takes her identity, and moves on to the next village.
It's possible that The Vampire Lovers would've worked better as a short, because there's clearly not enough material here to sustain a 90-minute movie. The film never passes beyond its initial premise, featuring Mircalla's transient existence, turning it into an almost excruciating experience. Far too many sequences feature characters talking about inconsequential things; there's no storyline here, so the dialogue is generally limited to non-expository matters. Worse of all, though, Mircalla proves to be a terminally dull character. The script never allows her to do a single thing that's even remotely intriguing; it's as if the mere fact that she's a lesbian is supposed to be enough to keep us interested (which just might be true for certain viewers).
This being a Hammer production, however, it's the visual look of the film that proves to be its only worthwhile aspect. Sets are shrouded in fog and the interiors of the various castles are genuinely impressive. But really, that's just not enough to prevent The Vampire Lovers from becoming an overlong bore.
