The Sacrament

Movie Info

From acclaimed writer/director Ti West (The House of the Devil) and master of horror Eli Roth (Hostel), THE SACRAMENT follows two journalists as they set out to document their friend's journey to find his missing sister. They travel to "Eden Parish," a self-sustained utopia. At the center of this small, religious, socialist community is a mysterious leader known only as "Father." As their friend reunites with his sister, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a race to escape with their lives.(c) Magnolia
Editor’s note: Our review of The Sacrament originally ran during last year’s Fantastic Fest, but we’re re-posting it now as the film opens in limited release.
The past is no guarantee of the future, but it’s often a fairly good guide. A new film from Ti West, for example, offers the soft promise of an unhurried pace and escalating terror as evidenced by his two previous movies, The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. Past films about cults offer a similar road map to where future ones will go, and while there are far more than two on the topic they seem to be split pretty evenly between two destinations. Some say the world will end with guns and Kool-Aid, others say with sacrifices to the gods.
VICE is a journalism outfit known for breaking the stories that other outlets pass by out of fear or worries over ratings, but their latest story finds Sam (A.J. Bowen) and his cameraman Jake (Joe Swanberg) tagging along with a photographer friend named Patrick (Kentucker Audley) who’s concerned with his sister Caroline’s (Amy Seimetz) welfare. She’s joined a cult that recently transplanted itself outside of the U.S., and Patrick wants to confirm her safety and extricate her if necessary. The trio arrive, and while things seem calm and relatively normal at first it’s not long before the truth comes calling.
The Sacrament is well made in many regards, but it’s also sadly predictable and ultimately pointless. And thanks to its format choice, that of an actual episode of VICE, it’s irritatingly distracting too.
“Please help us.”
Sam has left behind a pregnant wife for his latest adventure, and while he has some trepidation en route their first several hours at Eden Parish reveal smiling residents more than happy to discuss how Father’s (Gene Jones) guidance has in fact given their lives meaning and hope. Caroline seems equally well-adjusted (relatively speaking) and clean of the drug use and depression that had plagued her back in society, but just as the team’s guard comes down Sam is handed a note. It’s a simple plea for help, and suddenly this heaven on earth becomes something else entirely.
This is the most straight forward and simple film of West’s short career so far, and while that’s neither a good nor a bad thing on its own it makes other issues that much more visible.
But first the good news. The performances are strong across the board with Seimetz and Jones in particular standing apart from the crowd with their powerful and charismatic turns. Jones seems tailor made for the role delivering a somewhat more understated take on the “leader” character than Michael Parks managed with his showy turn in Kevin Smith’s Red State. He has a natural presence that seamlessly blends both comfort and threat together in mesmerizing fashion. Bowen is also quite good with a character far more human than the funny and/or creepy guys he’s often relegated to.
There are also some scenes of real tension as the terror builds around our intrepid reporters later in the film, with one of the best coming around the midpoint and consisting solely of dialogue. Sam and Father sit down for an interview in front of the entire congregation, and the ensuing battle of words leaves an electric uneasiness hanging in the air.
Unfortunately though there’s not an original thought to be found here. Nothing new is offered to the cult film canon, and nothing is added to the conversation surrounding what makes people join groups like these or what motivates the men at the top. Worse, it’s immediately clear which direction the film is heading in to everyone but our intrepid reporters. A real life incident bearing a remarkable similarity to events here seems to have occurred in an alternate universe as no one here thinks to mention it directly.
And finally, there’s the unsurprising issues that arise from the film’s formatting choice as a piece of edited news footage ostensibly taken from one or two cameras. More than one occasion sees a scene unfold from multiple perspectives when only one camera is being used. The trio’s opening walk into the compound for example features an uninterrupted conversation captured from repeatedly shifting angles magically taken from a single camera. Some viewers don’t have an issue with errors like this, but it forces the question as to whether or not the format was at all a necessity. This could have very easily been a narrative film, and while that wouldn’t have addressed the story’s limited nature it would have at least removed the distractions.
The Sacrament is worth a watch for fans of the director and cast, but its lack of purpose or anything to say limits its staying power dramatically. Some say the world will end with guns and Kool-Aid, others say with sacrifices to the gods, but both work best when we don’t know that they’re coming ninety minutes in advance.
The Upside: Well-acted all around; Gene Jones and Amy Seimetz in particular stand out; some brief tension
The Downside: Pointless as it adds nothing to the conversation; predictable as it goes exactly where we’d expect; repeatedly ignores its own rules of camera use
On the Side: Ti West, Joe Swanberg and Amy Seimetz have all directed at least one feature film starring at least one of the other two. A.J. Bowen is often their lucky charm.

Blood Widow

After Dark Review
Blood Widow is a new slasher horror film from director Jeremiah Buckhalt starring Danielle Lilley, Brandon Kyle Peters, Christopher de Padua and Gabrielle Ann Henry as the Blood Widow. The film manages to spook up some pretty good scares throughout the film and features a horror monster that manages to be both feminine and terribly frightening. Viewers are sure to jump out of their seats a couple times throughout the film, though the down moments where the film attempts to establish characters and develop their relationships fall short. Horror fans looking for a new slasher film to watch should look no further than Blood Widow

The narrative of Blood Widow begins with a happy tale of a young couple buying their dream home and moving in. Unfortunately, the duo are stuck in a horror film, and they purchased a house near a boarding school where a mass murder was committed some year ago. Their dream soon becomes a nightmare when their friends visit and come up with the brilliant idea of exploring the crumbling building. One lone survivor remains inside the crumbling building, and she doesn't take too kindly to strangers invading her home. The Blood Widow soon emerges from the darkness and begins going on a new killing spree which none of the friends may survive.

The storyline of Blood Widow is pretty basic and doesn't have many surprises for horror movie fans. The acting in the film is mostly poor, so any point throughout the film where the protagonists aren't being chased or killed is pretty boring. The director does do a good job of setting up scenes that are sure to make viewers jump out of their seats more than a few times. These moments include jump scares, but the actual Blood Widow character is pretty haunting and leaves an uneasy feeling in the pit of viewers' stomachs as well. Overall, Blood Widowleaves horror fans satisfied and makes the movie well worth renting.

Fans shouldn't expect Blood Widow to be one of the best horror films of the year, but the low budget film does a lot with what is available to it. There are enough scares to make it an entertaining watch, and a female horror villain makes the film a memorable experience. Gabrielle Ann Henry's Blood Widow performance is chilling and will stick with viewers long after the credits roll. It takes a lot for a horror movie to make an impact in the film industry, and while Blood Widow may not be a name that people will remember a year from now, it's still a fun movie to watch at least once. Look for Blood Widow on DVD and Video on Demand or for rent from Redbox.

IMDb
  • Laurie and Hugh are a successful young couple who have just closed on a weekend home away from the city. Unbeknownst to them, the neighboring property contains the crumbling remains of a boarding school that was shuttered in the wake of an unspeakable massacre. The sole survivor of that massacre still resides in the ruins of the school, hiding from the world and wanting only to be left alone. When Laurie and Hugh's friends explore the property, they have no idea that they disturbed an emotionally-broken killing machine: The Blood Widow.

The line between film-making and reality blurs when a resentful ghost takes over a film production office
In a Dallas film studio the actors and crew of a horror film become the victims of their own bloody horror story. One by one, they are killed off by a vengeful ghost who seems to be re-enacting some of the scariest moments in the history of film. As the director and his pretty actresses begin to piece together a forty year old puzzle, it may be too late for them all. The key to their freedom is held by a creepy old woman who reveals a murder mystery with a shocking and sinister twist.

that's a very well done little ghost story!!!

The story is not really original or new,but the execution of it is absolutely brilliant,as acting, special effects, cinematography and directing!!!

really liked return to a bigger projects of very good but forgotten actor Billy Zane, main actress is a very talented young lady and all the cast performed really good!the humour was appropriate, clever and didn't messed up the scary tone of the film.

Simply put, very well done,on a small budget this horror delivers much more entertainment that a multimillion "blockbusters"

Definitely recommended!!!

They made it this way on purpose. Doesn't mean it shouldn't have been better.

*** This review may contain spoilers ***
Well this is just awful, but what makes it even worse is that it has all been done on purpose. Many people will watch this for Billy Zane, and for those people this will be exactly what you are hoping for in Zane's non stop blabber and off hand remarks that on some occasions don't even have anything to do with the movie. Now fans of Lacey Chabert will be completely disappointed by the amount of screen time she actually gets, and the limited depth of her character. Lacey has talent, (find, and watch Thirst if you are not already as sure of that as you should be) but once again, she is being wasted in a terrible movie that very few people will actually ever watch. Now about the movie itself, there is no reason why it has to be this bad, they started out well, and they have stocked the movie with a lot of talent, it is just that the intention of the production team seems to have been to create something funny, sadly that mark was missed. Every door before it opens has to be shown first as a scary thing that the cameras must rush up to as if a great invisible beast were coming (every time). Why does it hate the doors so much? is almost funny, and sadly the only almost in there. The ghost is in the house, and of the house, so where is it coming from each time that it needs to storm the doors, or when no one is looking to get scared, why would it need to open doors sneakily? I'm sure I am taking this movie a lot more seriously than the cast did while they worked on it, but if you are going to choose a movie to be entertained by for an hour, and a half or more, you should at least be entertained. The acting is all fine, how can you fault a room full of improving actors when the script most likely just gives a rough idea, and says go nuts. I did not Enjoy this movie, and do not recommend it at all. Even a horror parody has to be based in something, or anchored somehow to some rule that does not change, this is too loose for it's own good.

Freddy's Nightmares

IMdb
I remember the Freddy's Nightmares series very well (and recently looked into some videos that were released years ago). True, they did sell out after the third movie and turned Freddy into a cartoonish character, but the cartoonish character was perfect for the small screen. The first episode, "No More Mr. Nice Guy," mistells the story in every way (you'd think Tobe Hooper would've watched the first movie before he shot the episode), but after the show took off, the stories became more entertaining. The sequel to "Mr. Nice Guy," "Sister's Keeper," was one of my favorite episodes (though I haven't seen it in years). Some shows had little-known guest stars (such as Brad Pitt) and some featured old favorites (such as Tony Dow). Most Elm Street fans say this show was a huge disappointment (and in a way it was), but it gave Freddy another medium to wreak havok in, so I applaud their efforts.

I got 2 seasons online free do not know if they're more

    George Wallace

    Rotten Tomatoes

    Movie Info

This biopic chronicles the colorful life of former three-time Alabama Governor George Wallace, an outspoken conservative whose views on segregation led to his being shot and permanently disabled, something that abruptly ended his attempt for the Presidency. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
"Drama is reality in imaginary circumstances."
    -- John Frankenhemier

(As Quoted in Vision and Conflict:
    Collaborating on the Wallace Saga
    ; Disc 2)

Long before "We Know Drama" became TNT's slogan, John Frankenheimer knew drama. He always had a special admiration for works of historical, cultural and political importance, including not just the made-for-television award-winning biopics and true tales that defined the last chapter of his career with the creation of films including Andersonville, The Burning Season, Against, the Wall, andPath to War but as evidenced in his earliest work like The Manchurian Candidate, The Train, The Young Savages, Birdman of Alcatraz andSeven Days in May.
