Blood Widow

After Dark Review
Blood Widow is a new slasher horror film from director Jeremiah Buckhalt starring Danielle Lilley, Brandon Kyle Peters, Christopher de Padua and Gabrielle Ann Henry as the Blood Widow. The film manages to spook up some pretty good scares throughout the film and features a horror monster that manages to be both feminine and terribly frightening. Viewers are sure to jump out of their seats a couple times throughout the film, though the down moments where the film attempts to establish characters and develop their relationships fall short. Horror fans looking for a new slasher film to watch should look no further than Blood Widow

The narrative of Blood Widow begins with a happy tale of a young couple buying their dream home and moving in. Unfortunately, the duo are stuck in a horror film, and they purchased a house near a boarding school where a mass murder was committed some year ago. Their dream soon becomes a nightmare when their friends visit and come up with the brilliant idea of exploring the crumbling building. One lone survivor remains inside the crumbling building, and she doesn't take too kindly to strangers invading her home. The Blood Widow soon emerges from the darkness and begins going on a new killing spree which none of the friends may survive.

The storyline of Blood Widow is pretty basic and doesn't have many surprises for horror movie fans. The acting in the film is mostly poor, so any point throughout the film where the protagonists aren't being chased or killed is pretty boring. The director does do a good job of setting up scenes that are sure to make viewers jump out of their seats more than a few times. These moments include jump scares, but the actual Blood Widow character is pretty haunting and leaves an uneasy feeling in the pit of viewers' stomachs as well. Overall, Blood Widowleaves horror fans satisfied and makes the movie well worth renting.

Fans shouldn't expect Blood Widow to be one of the best horror films of the year, but the low budget film does a lot with what is available to it. There are enough scares to make it an entertaining watch, and a female horror villain makes the film a memorable experience. Gabrielle Ann Henry's Blood Widow performance is chilling and will stick with viewers long after the credits roll. It takes a lot for a horror movie to make an impact in the film industry, and while Blood Widow may not be a name that people will remember a year from now, it's still a fun movie to watch at least once. Look for Blood Widow on DVD and Video on Demand or for rent from Redbox.

  • Laurie and Hugh are a successful young couple who have just closed on a weekend home away from the city. Unbeknownst to them, the neighboring property contains the crumbling remains of a boarding school that was shuttered in the wake of an unspeakable massacre. The sole survivor of that massacre still resides in the ruins of the school, hiding from the world and wanting only to be left alone. When Laurie and Hugh's friends explore the property, they have no idea that they disturbed an emotionally-broken killing machine: The Blood Widow.
