Night Scream

Based By the Book "The Soul of Betty Fairchild"  By Robert Specht

IMDb

Drew is a young woman who drives to a small town she has never been to while in a trance. A year ago in this town Laura, who looked just like Drew, was murdered. Everyone assumed that Laura's boyfriend Teddie who went missing at the same time as the murder had done it, but Drew starts having dream sequences and trances that imply otherwise. Gradually through investigation and with the guidance of more visions from Laura, Drew uncovers the story behind the murders.

TV Guide
This made-for-TV whodunit halfheartedly teases viewers with the promise of supernatural happenings. One year ago, Laura Fairgate was killed, apparently the victim of a murder-suicide perpetrated by her boyfriend, Teddy. Laura's mother, Julie Ordwell (Teri Garr), has suffered from depression ever since and her marriage to wheeler-dealer Big Ray Ordwell (Denis Arndt) provides little respite from grief. Then a stranger, Drew Summers (Candace Cameron Bure), blows into Laura's Oregon hometown claiming that the dead woman's spirit is speaking through her. Sensing the story's tabloid potential, local reporter Charles Penedekton (Ned Vaughn) offers to help Drew through her Bridey Murphy-style experience. Julie, for her part, embraces Drew as if she were Laura reincarnated. The fact that Teddy's body was never recovered is only one of several mysteries still surrounding Laura's death, one about which Big Ray knows a thing or two. His son, Little Ray (Casper van Dien), is Drew's boyfriend, and he's convinced Drew that he's the missing Ted. On orders from his father, Little Ray persuades Drew to worm her way into Julie's confidence with an eye to locating Laura's diaries. Drew soon suffers a crisis of conscience as Julie treats her like a second daughter, and regrets having agreed to take part in Little Ray's deception. Although there's a reason for Big Ray's machinations and a logical explanation for Drew's psychic charade, the late Laura may have the last laugh after all. Will Laura's spirit really materialize and exact revenge for Big Ray's perfidy? Though the film serves up one narrative twist after another, the plot's turns only serve to strangle any suspense that might have been generated by the complicated relationships between characters. Little more than a vanity production for star and co-producer Bure, this half-baked thriller piles up coincidences in the name of keeping viewers in the dark.
