June 1st 2015 marks the nationwide release of UK horror movie The Cutting Room. The film from production company Itchy Fish Film and writer / director Warren Dudleywas shot at the historic Newhaven Fort in East Sussex during the Autumn of 2014. Executive producer John Herbert is the brother of legendary horror writer James, while actor and producer TJ Herbert is his nephew.
The Cutting Room's writer and director Warren Dudley is aware of the late James Herbert's legacy and its effect on British horror. He said, "For me growing up Stephen King's horror always felt very 'American' while James's had a quintessential Britishness that I really loved. His books 'The Rats' and 'The Fog' had as much influence on me as horror movies like Jaws and The Omen during my youth. I genuinely hope James would have enjoyed The Cutting Room and its stripped down 'everyday England' atmosphere."
The film follows college students Raz (Parry Glasspool), Charlie (Lucy-Jane Quinlan) and Jess (Lydia Orange) who are about to start work on their end of year Media Studies project. A recent wave of apparent cyberbullying and the disappearance of two local girls lead the group to an abandoned army barracks situated deep in the forests that surround the college. What they find there is a terrifying labyrinth of tunnels from which there seems no escape... and a dark figure hell bent on tormenting them.
The Cutting Room is available from Tesco, HMV, iTunes and Amazon and has already been subject to several offers from US distribution companies, with producer TJ Herbert stating, "It's been an incredible journey so far. The writing on the project only started in January 2014 and with the help of a very talented cast and crew, and a brilliant location, we believe we have created something truly frightening!"
Critics agree, with BBC Entertainment's Chris Summers saying "Terrifying...with a truly shocking finale." and Richard Gladman of Space Monsters Magazine stating, "What starts as a seemingly straight forward mystery soon becomes an in-your-face, shocking nightmare."
