01FilmPlot
Story:
Set in a futuristic UK society, it is new year’s eve, with traditional dance parties and roaming youth when an explosion hits a nightclub, killing 236 people. According to government, there had been an abandoned chemical weapons storage underground where explosion occurred. So military rapidly takes control of the area and quarantines it to determine how much toxin material might have spread. Majority of people evacuate the city in panic despite government’s assurance that contamination has not spread outside the quarantined space. A photojournalist Jennifer Preston (Natalia Tena), wants to document the whole event through her camera and starts taking photographs of different areas of the city. Soon she discovers a strange phenomenon showing up in her photographs. She decides to unearth the mystery and get at truth behind the seemingly paranormal activity captured in her pictures. Government is determined to keep things secret but nothing can stop her from finding the truth which ultimately proves much more horrifying than she initially thought. She must save her boyfriend, Jonas (Iwan Rheon) who works for the same ministry that wants to hide reality. A detective Levis Mathis who is interrogating the death of a woman, also gets embroiled in her struggle that soon becomes a race against time.
From the beginning of the movie ,a web of mystery is weaved by director which is successfully maintained throughout the whole drama. The ephemeral phantoms, suicidal and murderous inclinations in those who preferred to stay in the city and the struggle at demystification of eerie phenomena, all make it an interesting film.
Many of us have already watched Natalia Tena and Iwan Rheon in Game of Thrones where their performance got universal applause. In Residue, both have proved again how much talent they possess.
Director Alex Garcia Lopez has intelligently used voice over narration through Jennifer Preston that gives the movie a kind of flashback touch. This is a complex technique that can hit back if tackled immaturely. But in this film, it has been used skillfully that keeps the audience glued to the screen.
