MOVIE INFO

Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro produces director Juan Antonio Bayona's gothic frightener about a long-abandoned orphanage with a particularly troubling past. As a child, young orphan Laura spent her formative years being cared for by the staff of a large orphanage located by the Spanish seaside. Those were some of the happiest years of Laura's life, and now, 30 years later, the former charge returns to the dilapidated institution with her husband, Carlos, and their seven-year-old son, Simon, to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. However, something ominous haunts the darkened hallways of this silent, stately manor. When Simon's behavior begins to grow increasingly bizarre and malicious, Laura and Carlos start to suspect that the mysterious surroundings have awoken something ominous in the young boy's imagination. It's not long before Laura, too, is drawn into this disturbing web and the repressed memories of the past come flooding back in a terrifying torrent of tension and deeply disturbing revelations. With opening day drawing near and their situation growing increasingly grim by the hour, Carlos attempts to write off Simon's bizarre behavior as a desperate bid to get more attention from his distracted parents. Laura isn't so easily convinced of this theory, though, and soon embarks on a desperate quest to unearth the terrible secret that lurks in the old house, waiting for just the right moment to inflict devastating damage on both her and her family.

Evil Night

Amazon
This is probably one of the rarest horror movies from the 90s to be released on DVD. The film is directed by Todd Cook, who's known or not so known for making quite a few low budget films over the 90s and early-mid 00s. I actually wasn't even aware that this movie ever even existed, due to it's budget, until I came across its trailer on Youtube a couple of months ago. But now lets get into the review!

So for starters, this is pretty much a low budget film with a typical plot. The movie opens with the main character Jimmy Fisher, who's the high school nerd and is constantly being picked on by a clique of preppy, popular, bratty kids. That afternoon as he walks home from school, he's offered an invitation by head bully, Peter, who's throwing a party that night. Jimmy foolishly accepts and unbeknownst to him, the invitation is all a ploy to set him up for their latest prank. The opening credits then begin.

That evening when Jimmy arrives to the destination, which turned out to be an abandoned house for sale; he steps inside the house to find Jennifer, Peter's girlfriend and his long time crush. Jennifer seduces Jimmy before the rest of the bullying kids step out and attack Jimmy. After the prank leaves Jimmy unconscious, Peter and his gang run off to his house down the street for the real party. When Jimmy awakens later that night, so does an evil within him that's been building inside of him for quite some time and been waiting to be unleashed.

Jimmy goes on a killing spree and knocks off his tormentors one by one. The bullies may have given Jimmy Fisher a night he'll never forget, but Jimmy will give them all a night they won't live to remember.

Fallen Soldiers

IMDb
  • Set in Europe 1815. During the war which rages across the continent a noble couples coach is hijacked by a desperate British soldier. At gunpoint, the soldier spins an outlandish tale of plagues, conspiracies, and dead men returning from the grave. He begs for help. So to trust this madman, or kill him? It's a decision that could save or damn thousands, and turn the tide of the war.
    - Written by Angel

War is raging in Europe with the French hell bent on taking on the world. When a British soldier with a very remarkable secret hijacks a young noblemans coach, with his wife onboard. During a struggle the soldier kills the noble man but his wife cleverly tricks him into chains. He begins to tell a story of plagues, monsters and men returning from the dead. As insane as it sounds the story begins to become real, very, very quickly. As we travel furthur, truths are exposed and horrors become real.

The themes within this film play on one area I have studied many years ago. History of this period is filled with rogues, rebellions and a British sense of pride in thwarting that eternal enemy (The French but usually the Germans!) British success has been always over emphasised and over intergrated in the narratives of many of our lives. I could set up this film very easily for a fall. Critics often look to take a film like this down and I always try very hard to avoid this. I could tell you that it is a very on trend and quite current indeed. It has many of the components that today are almost dot to dot marketing tools. The reason I say this is that now, almost every direct to DVD film has to have at least a zombie in it. They also must have a beautiful woman in little (and tight) clothing in it and finally they must have a bit of blood and a very little bit of horror. So we have three checks here as all of the above are in attendance. The have come into the party but unlike so many other films they have shown up and not vomited on the carpet. The have actually come together and made Thomas film work so well.

The film is a blend of explotation cinema and clear sighted genre piece.Thomas has shown himself to be a gifted and very savvy director. He has taken a limited budget, limited terms and not had it hamper his ambition. What he has done is crafted a very clever piece of genre cinema that is not bound by its conventions. Conventions are always there in the mindset of film fans and cinema is often riddled with attempts by film makers stuck in the form. Some use invention but that can cause an audience to run away. Some marry them together and achieve nothing more than a replicant. Yes it is a conspiracy, zombie film but it uses a series of clever adaptions to make this fresher than it has been before. I have had to see a list of films that all have tried to do this but here we have an attempt that will be talked of after this moment in time. Yes it has hammy acting in places and yes the main set it over used but the good cast, great camera work and simply ambition is amazing.

I love the film and feel it should be watched by you. Only if to wonder what is next from Thomas....

POD

IMDb
A family intervention goes horrifically awry within the snowy confines of an isolated lake house.

Hollywood Reporter

Mickey Keating's low-budget horror film concerns a PTSD-afflicted veteran who claims to be the victim of a mysterious government conspiracy.

Beginning with its opening credits that flash by in a mere few seconds, Mickey Keating's (Ritual) sophomore feature indicates that it has no interest in leisurely storytelling. Depicting the fraught encounter between two siblings and their PTSD-afflicted brother, Pod has a hallucinatory quality that makes up in ferocity what it lacks on cogent storytelling. Having recently received its world premiere at SXSW, the horror film seems a natural for midnight screenings, especially since its frantically paced 76-minute running time guarantees that its audiences won't get home too late.
Displaying influences ranging from The Twilight Zone to such recent paranoid conspiracy thrillers as Bug, the film begins with Ed (Dean Cates) and Lyla (Lauren Ashley Carter) traveling to the remote Maine cabin where their combat veteran brother Martin (Brian Morvant) lives. Ed has dragged his reluctant sister along for the trip after receiving a frantic message from Martin, but what they find is even worse than they anticipated.
The clearly disturbed Martin begins raving about a mysterious conspiracy and the "pod" contained in his basement. He also claims that the government has planted some sort of tracking device in his teeth, with a resulting scene of gruesome, self-inflicted dentistry definitely upping the proceedings' "ick" quotient.
Although Ed tries to instill some calmness to the situation, Lyla completely devolves into a hysterical state. Martin, meanwhile, begins to make some sense. He does, after all, point out that the one thing that Lee Harvey Oswald, Charles Whitman and Timothy McVeigh had in common was that they were all former soldiers. It's definitely food for thought.
That's about it in terms of the plot, which eventually involves a mysterious trench coat-wearing figure (veteran horror filmmaker Larry Fessenden, in a nicely referential bit of casting) who shows up to wreak more havoc.

Isolation 119

IMDb
  • Jack White flies to South East Asia to start a new life, but soon finds his life being threatened on arrival by events beyond his control or understanding, until his grip on reality begins to spiral dangerously out of control.

LoveHorror
Isolation 119 is a low budget indie horror with high aspirations.
The project is a first time outing for writer, director and star Kevin Baker who puts many to shame where effort and perseverance are concerned.
After a man attempts suicide in his home in Thailand, isolation 119 filmhis brother, Jack comes over to visit him in hospital more generally, look after his house and affairs.
Whilst staying at this brother’s place, Jack has a few nasty experiences including a visit from a ruthless loanshark. He’s given a limited time to repay one his brother’s debts, but focussing on doing so isn’t easy as he is soon haunted by nightmarish apparitions in the house.
After some investigating, he realises that a demon is also on his case and wants him dead (preferably by suicide) and a masked spectre-like messenger soon gives him a deadly ultimatum.
With his life in danger and time against him, Jack must battle insanity and paid thugs to have any chance of survival.
The first thing that strikes you about Isolation 119 is that it is an incredibly small production. A small team and a small budget.
Apart from the fact that it’s set on location in Thailand, it’s obvious that this small scale has led to it lacking in some key areas. These are equipment (lighting and sound), cast – all of which are clearly amateur – and the story/script which is messy and at times, confusing.
isolation 119 film
It’s plain to see that this is a first time, full length production for Kevin and sadly first time productions are rarely (if ever) any good.
That’s not to say that the passion isn’t there though.
Isolation 119 does have some good qualities. The general idea isn’t the worst, and with a little more thought and some professional assistance with writing the path of the story could have been made more clear. This too would have allowed the director to focus more on what he’s trying to convey rather than getting too distracted by scenes that look nice but have no relevance to the story. Instead, too much time is spent filming certain actions or subjects (like local wildlife), which may look nice or have been shot in a creative way but just aren’t needed.
And it’s the distractions such as these that make the film confusing.
There are also odd moments of comedy thrown in, which also don’t make sense to the predominantly dark story, and the music in the title scenes (which are used to introduce characters) is peculiar and mis-judged.
It would seem that the actors are all first timers too. Which is a shame. Kevin, who plays out main character Jack is wooden and doesn’t manage to convey the terror and frustration that a man in his situation would be feeling.
And it’s perhaps this ‘do it all yourself’ approach that has allowed for the film to wander from its promising path. It’s hard to be objective and take full directorial control of a film if you are the main character in it.
isolation 119 film
I realise that it’s not cheap or easy to find good talent and take it to Thailand for production, but this is perhaps where one of the biggest problems lies. Location seems to have been more of a priority than finding the right team to make this idea come alive. You can find an abundance of capable, aspiring actors and actresses online for little cost in the UK. Unless it’s essential that your story is filmed in another part of the world, you’re far better off doing it for less cost and to a higher standard over here.
In this cirumstance, casting someone else as Jack would have allowed Kevin focus fully on directing.
Isolation 119 is a labour of love and it’s great that aspiring film makers are devoting their time to creating full length independent horror films. But it’s a shame when all of that investment in equipment and time is let down by corner cutting elsewhere.
No doubt Isolation 119 will have been a great learning experience for Kevin Baker to build upon. It’s an ‘A’ for effort but some way short of that in terms of being a good horror film.

THE OUIJA EXPERIMENT 2: THEATRE OF DEATH

HorrorNews
YNOPSIS:
A group of unsuspecting theatre goers are trapped, after a ravenous spirit is resurrected and released from a Ouija board.
REVIEW:
I looked this up before I got started. The title I found for it is actually The Ouija Experiment 2:Theater of Death. Apparently this is a sequel to another film. Having not seen the first one, I’m coming into this a bit blind. However, I should point out that the opening credits do a bit of a summary of the events of the first film, so there’s that.
Short version of that summary – Don’t mess with ouija boards. Just freaking don’t.

Moving on….
The first film looks like a “found footage” style movie, with our characters playing around with a ouija board and filming the results.
This film breaks the fourth wall by opening with the “cast” of the original film (all playing themselves in this case)at the premiere of their footage in a movie theater.
Swisyzinna, Justin Armstrong, and Eric Window come on stage with the theater manager Ty (Eric Zettina) and start taking questions from the audience. During the Q & A, weird stuff starts to happen. One of the audience members asks about the legend of the theater itself, a story that says a family of cannibals used to own it and ate babies and stuff.
Foreshadow much?
So this is the big “Ouija Weekend” event, and the theater owner has a great promotion for the show attendees. Attendees can win tickets to spend the night in the theater for an overnight haunted tour with the cast of the film. Basically, the first 15 minutes of the film appear to be actual footage from the premiere screening of their first film. The cast signing autographs and posing for pics, that sort of thing. and the sound is atrocious. Really, really awful.
Anyway, the cast get together and discuss the “storyline” for the overnight haunt. It’s all supposed to be a set up, a haunted attraction event to give the fans a good fright. Turns out Justin didn’t get his copy. See, everything was laid out in detail on a group page on-line but since Justin can’t spell the word “ouija”, he never found it.

Eric and theater assistant Elena (Jessica Willis), instead of helping set up the stages, decide to have a little fun by playing with the prop ouija board from the movie. There’s no way this could end badly, right?
Because the rule is…never stop playing with a ouija board without saying “goodbye”.
You geussed it. They totally space that part. Wanna geuss what happens next?
As for supporting characters, I have to make mention of the local sheriff, played by Tom Zembrod. The Sheriff isn’t a big fan of people playing around with the supernatural, and tries to warn everyone that they should leave well enough alone. No one ever listens to “that guy” in any movie, but of course he turns out to be right.
I do like that the film is very self aware. There are quite a few movie trope jokes. In a scene early in the film, Swisyzinna drops her keys under an alley staircase. As she bumbles down the stairs in 5 inch heels to retrieve them, she exclaims “Why you gotta be the black girl that dies first in the movie?” She doesn’t die there, but the fact that bit of dialougue exists gives me some small joy.
Otherwise, we have a whole lot actors walking around dark corridors shouting “Is someone there” over and over again. We get some fun noises off camera, and the occaisional “cloud of evil” rushing through.
The-Ouija-Resurrection-2015-The-Ouija-Experiment-2-Theatre-of-Death-(1)
When we finally do get to the good stuff (about 30 minutes in, which isn’t so bad), it comes fast and furious. They don’t pussyfoot around when they get down to it, and while the effects aren’t brilliant, there’s a good amount of “jump and boo” that’s appropiate.
One great hook is the “video glasses”. Sunglasses with a built it SD card that double as a video camera. One of the better sequences in the film uses this hook and it’s pretty cool.
This isn’t a great film, but to be fair it isn’t necessarily awful. A little slow, and the sound mix is extremely annoying. On the whole, if there’s nothing else better to do, it’s an acceptable waste of 86 minutes.
So on a scale of one to ten, ten being awesome, I’m giving this film 5 ouija boards
