Movie Info

The feature-film debut of multi-talented filmmaker Clive Barker, this grim and surreal project is based on the writer/director's own novella The Hell-Bound Heart. The film opens with a chilling prologue in which globe-trotting pervert Frank (Sean Chapman) -- a connoisseur of sexual depravity seeking the ultimate sensual experience -- purchases a small, intricate puzzle box from an unseen dealer in an unspecified country. Upon solving the puzzle, Frank opens the door to a hellish alternateuniverse and is promptly torn to ribbons by a network of hooks and chains; his strewn body parts are subsequently collected by the Cenobites -- grotesque, S & M-clad denizens of hell. The story continues several years later, when Frank's brother, Larry (Andrew Robinson), moves into Frank's abandoned house with his daughter, Kirsty (Ashley Laurence), and his new wife, Julia (Clare Higgins). An accident causes some of Larry's blood to spill on the attic floor, which somehow triggers Frank's hideous resurrection. His body only half-composed, Frank seeks the tacit assistance of Julia -- with whom he had once had a torrid sexual liaison -- in restoring him to human form. Still secretly in love with Frank, Julia assists him by seducing men from the town and bringing them back to the house so her undead lover can drain their bodies of blood. Her increasingly furtive behavior arouses the suspicions of Kirsty, who had already moved to an apartment to get away from her despised stepmother. After following Julia and her next potential victim home, Kirsty comes face to face with the still-incomplete Frank, narrowly escaping with her life...and with the puzzle box. After losing consciousness, Kirsty awakens in the hospital, where she manages to solve the box's intricate mechanism and summon a trio of Cenobites -- including their apparent leader (played by Doug Bradley and dubbed "Pinhead" on subsequent sequels) -- who are prepared to claim her. In desperation, Kirsty offers them a bargain in which they agree to spare her soul if she leads them to Frank. Kirsty soon returns home to find Julia with her father...whose behavior has become disturbingly unnatural. Realizing that her father has become Frank's latest victim -- and that her uncle is now walking around in his brother's skin -- Kirsty hands Frank over to the Cenobites, who have particularly evil plans for their old friend.
Candy and movie review
Hellraiser (1987)

So I've gotten a little behind in the October Extravaganza.  Blame the Orioles making the playoffs for the first time since I was eight, not me.  Anyway, thanks new readers from Venezuela and Zimbabwe.  Expect some catching up posts to come over the weekend.  I suppose the first thing I should address is what happened to movie 58 because I know your worried.  Instead of counting each of the movies in the post as its own movie, I am grouping them into one.  Why you ask.  Because I have the power to do so.  Onto Hellraiser where I'm actually blogging while I watch instead of after to make up some time.  Hopefully you won't raise hell with a bunch of complaining.  Oh boy.

Movie paused, need more introducing.  What makes the Hellraiser series famous?  Pinhead.  That is his actual name and he gets it by having a bunch of pins.    Pins that stick out of his head.  Quality breakdown I know, but Pinhead is one of those characters in a slasher movie who creeped you out when you saw him on the cover of a movie a blockbuster but now looks dorky.  That made me think if there was anything that I liked as a young lad that now gives me the heebie jeebies.  The only thing I can think of is Rugrats.  Not the children themselves, but the conspiracy http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/The_Rugrats_Theory

Movie opens with a close up on a fancy looking cube and pans out to a guy with the dirtiest fingernails ever buying the box from an Asian guy.  Scene cuts right to the dude kneeling on the ground in a dark room surrounded by candles.  The cube is a puzzle box and he opens it up and puts it back together and a bunch of hooks shoot out of it and shoot into his skin.  Does that mean that he got the puzzle right or wrong?  The next scene is a bunch of hooks with like ears and a skull are hanging from the ceiling and the ground is covered in flesh.  Making a strong guess by saying it's what's left of the dude.  Pretty gnarly.  A guy with pins on his head (Pinhead) walks up to the puzzle box, closes it and everything vanishes.  Pinhead, flesh and hooks all gone.

The dead guys brother walks into the house and apparently decides to just move in.  His wife/girlfriend is not stoked.  Maybe pinhead didn't take the stank of death with him.  The guys daughter calls him and says she is looking for a job and dad tells her she doesn't have to.  She declines and says she wants to.  Dummy.  The next day she shows up to the house while her dad is moving in.  She looking pretty good I have to say.  The wife/girlfriend of that dad did something with the brother. I'm going to guess that a night of getting jiggy with it occurred.

After two flashbacks, yup, that's what happened.  She acts really weird for like 10 minutes while her husband and two movers struggle to get a mattress up the stairs. Come on.  While moving it, the dad cuts his hand on a nail and the blood gets sucked into the floor boards.  The camera shows like a heart or something beating under the floor.  Very weird.  They leave the room and a body gets gruesomely grown out of the floor.  I take back my previously very weird and would rather use it here.  The wife goes up into the blood room and the newborn body grabs him.  Body starts talking and says that it's the brother from the beginning.  He asks her for help which means more blood.

That night the daughter walks around the house and sees a bloody body on a table while feathers float around and a child screams.  Its just a dream.  A cool looking dream as long as you aren't the one in it.  Now we see the wife out at some bar and she seduces some guy home.  Naughty.  Even naughtier, she gets him to turn around and beats him to death with a hammer.  If we're being honest, if I had to choose between sleeping with her or getting beat to death with a hammer, I might have gone with the beating.

The daughter works at some pet store and has to kick a guy out for eating the bugs. She gets freaked out but I don't feel like its an acceptable amount of freakage.  Wife beats down another guy and the brother feeds on it.  The brother explains the puzzle box.  Says it opens a portal to the pleasures of heaven or hell.  Says the monsters (named the Cenobites) gave him an experience beyond pain and pleasure.

Later the wife and husband start banging while a brother who still doesn't have skin watches.  He walks in on them and pulls out a knife like the husband is about to get it but instead cuts a rat and walks away.  The next day the daughter goes to her dads home and spots the wife bringing in a dude.  The daughter (named Kirsty I guess I should start using named) walks in and sees the dead guy.  Then the brother (named Frank) attacks her.  She picks up the puzzle box and throws it out with window after saying dirty words.  She then rushes outside, grabs the box and runs away.

Kirsty passes out and wakes up in a hospital.  She finds the box and starts playing with it.  She of course opens it and a hole in the wall appears.  I personally wouldn't walk into it but she does and gets chased by a monster.  After a chase she busts through the hole and the wall and it closes safely behind her.  Safe is the wrong word to use because things in the room start happening like light bulbs blowing up and monsters with no lips walking up to her and sticking their fingers in her mouth.  Okay varying degrees of things start happening.  Pinhead shows up and says "The box, you opened it and we came".  She responds with "It's just a puzzle box".  Right before they are about to torture her up something awful she yells that Frank escaped and I can take you to him.

FEELS LIKE THE END IS COMING.  LETS START THE SPOILERS.

The husband shows up back up, gets killed and Frank sleeps with the wife while wearing his brothers skin.  That's not normal.  Kirsty shows up at the house and thinks her dad is her uncle and her uncle is her dad.  I can see how it could be confusing for her.  Frank goes to stab Kirsty but stabs the wife instead.  If you don't know that Frank is a bad dude by now then you definitely do.  He chases after Kirsty a bit and she starts crying loudly which is never good for hiding.  She trips over her dad's skinless body after getting Frank into the cenobites room which kind of sucks but at least Pinhead shows and grabs him.  Hooks start shooting out and getting in his skin, making him yelp in pain.  That confuses me though, he is basically wearing a skin suit and shouldn't feel anything that happens to it because his brain doesn't have any nerves connected to it.  Or maybe you aren't supposed to think this much into it.  Frank gets ripped into a bunch of pieces and Kirsty is able to close the puzzle box before she gets some ripping of her own.  There is some scene after that in which the bug eating guy shows up, turns into a dragon skeleton and flies away with the box.  Couldn't explain it even if I wanted to.  The final scene is the Asain guy selling the box to a new sucker.

Favorite Scene : Tough to say because no scene really sticks out.  I liked the little dream sequence that Kirsty had the best I guess.

Memorable Lines : "No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering"

Rating : 5 caramel candy corns.  That's 5/10 in case you have forgotten, not 5/5.  I thought this movie was super average.  The only reason I can really think of for watching this, is just to say that you've watched it.  It's not like it was horrible but I won't be watching again.

Alternate Ending : Spoilers involved.  With new skin, Frank grows a new heart too, one made of gold.  He raises Kristy just like a child of his own.

What I would do if I was the main character : I'm pretty good with puzzles so it wouldn't take me long to figure out that box.  Then again I probably would never come in possession of it because there's no real reason to spend a lot of money on a puzzle.  Lets say just for the heck of it I did summon the Cenobites, then what?  I would probably just reason with them.  Sike, I'd be hanging from the ceiling in pieces too.

What happens in the sequel : I'm pretty sure there are at least 3 sequels.  I assume they all involve large amounts of blood and Pinhead exclaiming about how awesome pain is.  Maybe Corey Feldman is in one.
Box doesn't look like that much fun

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Before Too Wong foo There is Priscilla.

Movie Info

The usually menacing British actor Terence Stamp does a complete turnaround as Bernadette, an aging transsexual who tours the backwaters of Australia with her stage partners, Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) and Adam/Felicia (Guy Pearce). Their act, well-known in Sydney, involves wearing lots of makeup and gowns and lip-synching to records, but Bernadette is getting a bit tired of it all and is also haunted by the bizarre death of an old loved one. Nevertheless, when Mitzi and Felicia get an offer to perform in the remote town of Alice Springs at a casino, Bernadette decides to tag along. The threesome ventures into the outback with Priscilla, a lavender-colored school bus that doubles as dressing room and home on the road. Along the way, the act encounters any number of strange characters, as well as incidents of homophobia, while Bernadette becomes increasingly concerned about the path her life has taken. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi
Dr. Johnson famously remarked of a dog's ability to stand on its hind legs, that it was not done well, but he was surprised to find it done at all. I thought of that while I was watching "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," which stars Terence Stamp in drag. The macho British actor, best-known for "Billy Budd" and the villain in "Superman II," plays an aging transsexual named Bernadette, and it is done well, yet one is still surprised to find it done at all.
The movie opens in Sydney, Australia, where Bernadette is well-known in gay circles. Bernadette's partners in a flamboyant drag act are Tick, also known as Mitzi (Hugo Weaving), and Adam, aka Felicia (Guy Pearce). The act involves lip-synching to recordings while performing a vaguely choreographed stage show and wearing tacky gowns, a great many feather boas and a lot of eye shadow. Bernadette, who is clearly an intelligent person, is getting fairly tired of it all.
Sydney is also getting tired of Bernadette, and so when an invitation comes for a gig in the backwater town of Alice Springs, the three friends jump at it. Mitzi's former wife, now running a gambling casino, needs an act in a hurry. That sets up the introduction of Priscilla, which is the name of the recycled school bus which doubles as their dressing room and living quarters.
And off they go into the outback, with Priscilla painted a bright lavender.
I happened to see "Easy Rider" (1969) again at about the same time I saw "Priscilla," and it occurred to me that the structures were similar: The nonconformist heroes, whether hippies or drag queens, were taking a dangerous chance by making a road trip into reactionary territory. If you think Peter FondaDennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson made a juicy target in the redneck south with their choppers and long hair, imagine how warmly Bernadette, Mitzi and Felicia are welcomed in the outback.
The film settles into the rhythms of many road pictures, with lots of drive-by scenery, soul-searching talks during camp-outs on the road, and dicey encounters with the locals. There's a drinking contest with a lesbian who thinks she's more of a man than the queens. The lavender bus attracts some nasty anti-gay graffiti.
Bernadette looks more and more weary of this life. (It must not be easy in the best of times to live and travel in a school bus with two drag queens, and middle age takes its toll: Was this trip necessary?) At about the time when the possibilities of life on the road are exhausted, Priscilla arrives in Alice Springs, where Mitzi's ex-wife (Sarah Chadwick) seems fairly serene about the new life her former husband has chosen.
Mitzi's son also seems cool about the gender-blender situation, and the trio's lounge act goes over better in Alice than in the big city. Then there's a subplot about an auto mechanic whose own wife is a stripper so loony she makes Bernadette look good, and not only by comparison.
I guess the scenes of homophobic hostility in the movie are obligatory, but the writer-director,Stephan Elliott, doesn't seem to have his heart in them, and I wonder if he would have been happy to make the whole story as lighthearted as his best scenes. It's too bad that the requirements of plotting require movies like this to crank up the event count, when actually what works is just the daily minutiae of Bernadette's life. At the beginning of the film we're distracted by the unexpected sight of Terence Stamp in drag, but Stamp is able to bring a convincing humanity to the character, and eventually we realize that the real subject of the movie is not homosexuality, not drag queens, not showbiz, but simply the life of a middle-aged person trapped in a job that has become tiresome.

April fools day

IMDb
A year after an April Fool's Day prank which resulted in the death of one of their set, a group of friends find themselves targeted by someone who is out for revenge.

HorrorMovieaDay
MARCH 11, 2008
GENRE: CRAPHOLIDAYSLASHER
SOURCE: DVD (OWN COLLECTION) (for now)
Oh, April Fool’s Day, you fucking worthless excuse for a movie... why oh why do you exist?
Excluding cynicism, there are two reasons to remake a film: 1. To improve on a concept that was botched for whatever reason (studio interference, poor acting, whatever) in the original version, or 2. To introduce a once popular film to a new generation. Well, April Fool’s Day was NOT a popular film, and it’s only 20 years old, so the children of the teens that saw it in theaters when it was released are probably like 7 or so for the most part, and thus won’t really care. So does the film improve on the concept of the original?
(Note - spoilers ahead, but you'd almost have to TRY to not figure out the ending 12 seconds into the film).
No. Not even close. The original is actually a lot of fun, but it’s sort of spoiled by the ending, which reveals everything was a joke and no one’s really dead. So a remake would correct that, and have everyone REALLY die this time (or at least use AFD’s original ending and have the prank be revealed, and then suddenly a real killer shows up), right? Sadly, no one involved with this movie was that intelligent, apparently. In fact, they take their stupidity a step further – this movie actually has NOTHING in common with the original (different story, different characters, even a different setting entirely) EXCEPT for the idiotic ending!
Yes, once again, it’s all a prank. They try to sell one or two of the kills as real (one of them is an actress and thus has access to an entire Savini-style workshop, I guess), but for the most part they don’t even try. The main girl (Taylor Cole) is the only one who ever “sees” the murders, and even then she is always just stumbling on their bodies moments after they are “killed”. Maybe if you’ve never seen a horror movie in your life you will be fooled, but it’s so blatantly obvious that the killings are staged that I honestly thought for a long time that the twist would be that the killings WERE real this time around, and that the Butcher Brothers (squandering all of their promise from The Hamiltons, which wasn't much to begin with) were pulling a meta-joke on the audience – making real killings seem fake so the jaded audience familiar with the original would be surprised. Even the equally abysmal Catacombs did a better job at presenting a fake killer.
Unlike the original, this one isn’t very fun either. The characters are all completely unlikable (only Scout Taylor-Compton, queen of the unnecessary remakes, plays someone who isn’t a snooty prick) and they aren’t amusing. The original’s group had a nice repartee; I believed they were friends. These assholes don’t even seem to like each other, and while some of the girls are ridiculously hot (Cole looks like the scientifically amazing offspring of Chrarisma Carpenter and Evangeline Lilly, thus making her one of the hottest women in the world) the fact that we don’t even get to see any of them actually die just makes the movie WORSE.
Actually, there is one small exception – the character of David, played by Hamiltons’ Samuel Child. He’s an idiot running for Senate, so this results in a few Republican jokes. He also delivers one of the film’s two memorable lines when he drunkenly tells a guy “I’ll have you raped by a wizard!” for some goddamn reason.
The other good line comes from Blaine, our would-be hero, who’s also the most insufferable of them all. Most of the time he’s just being a jerk, but he takes a quick break from that winning character trait in order to deliver what HAS to be a meta line about the film itself. Scout’s character (the actress) is appearing in a bad slasher movie, and he comments “who cares about that movie - it doesn't even have any big stars!” Brilliant.
Let’s see, what else sucked? Well there’s the 25 minute prologue* that should have been 5 (it’s a year earlier and some of the characters are planning a prank. We know someone’s going to die – get the fuck to it!), nonsensical plot (the whole town seems to be in on the prank), a lengthy “Inside Edition” type news show with the fakest screen graphics I’ve ever seen in a film (note the hilarious “sports scores”) that does absolutely nothing but hint at the film’s obvious plot holes that result from some rewriting/post production editing, etc.
Yes, in this news scene one of the characters (another guy fromHamiltons) has written a book about the prank gone wrong, and the reporter cryptically notes that it’s not the first time he’s been involved with a high profile murder. It’s never mentioned again. Later, the heroine is explaining why everyone is guilty of something, and mentions that David couldn’t keep his dick in his pants, which caused a problem of some sort. No idea what the fuck she was talking about there. It’s later alleged that he had an affair with the dead girl (presumably BEFORE she died), but again – it seemingly has no bearing on anything. One only needs to read the confusing screenplay credits to know that this was a script that went through a lot of hands (it’s “based on a screenplay by” both the original film’s writer AND the Butcher Brothers, and yet written by someone else entirely), and boy does it show.
Look how hot this girl is, and I’m STILL calling the movie “Crap”!
All in all, there is absolutely no reason anyone should watch this movie. The “unrated” label means absolutely nothing – this film is BARELY worthy of a PG-13 (hell, they probably got a PG from the MPAA and were embarrassed by it), there is no actual gore or nudity, the twist is obvious (though to be fair they add a little extra bit of business to it, however it’s of no real consequence), the characters suck, and they don’t even bother to give the killer a mask. Everyone was surprised that it didn’t go into theaters – having seen it, it’s more amazing that the studio ever even considered it. Even Lionsgate would probably pass on this shit. This is easily the worst remake of the current crop (and no, I haven’t forgotten Scout’s other one) – I have to go back to Psycho 98 to think of one so utterly worthless.
What say you?

*I should note that this may be the first movie tagline (“She has a killer party planned”) that only references the film’s prologue – because there is no party at any other point in the movie. Also, saying “she” would pretty much spoil the ending if they were referring to the actual movie, since there are only 3 girls – one dies early on and the other is the one seeing all the murders. Nice work.
